Agrifood is one of the most important industries in Tunisia and produces a rich offering of high quality and mostly biological and ISO 9001 certified products: from pomegranates and dates from the desert south to grain, grapes and citrus fruits from the water-rich north. Tunisia exported in 2016 more than one billion dollar worth of agricultural and food products and imported around 200 million dollar worth of agricultural and food processing machines.
Water stress, food security and sustainable agriculture are important issues within the Tunisian agrifood industry, while the government tries to increase the production and knowledge level within the industry trough subsidies for investments in water-saving techniques, biological agriculture and agritech and technical education of employees.
The Tunisian agrifood industry is expected to grow further the coming years and the country can thanks to its export oriented economy become an important supplier of agricultural products and food for the European market. At the moment the European Union and Tunisia are negotiating the expansion of their existing free-trade treaty in order to give these products free access to the European market.
