Damietta Furniture City was launched in 2015 and contains around 1,500 workshops and 150 plants on 331 hectares. The project forms as such the heart of the Egyptian furniture industry and offers work to around 70% of the inhabitants of Damietta (40.000 direct jobs and 120.000 indirect jobs). Education, innovation and design institutes will also be established in Damietta Furniture City to bring the Egyptian furniture industry to the next level and to transform Damietta to the furniture hub of the region. Egypt has a long history of furniture crafting going back to the pharaohs. The modern Egyptian furniture industry is today mostly famous for the quality of woodworking and combines Arabic and Western styles. The sector focuses on both internal and foreign markets. In 2016 the internal market was 2.9 million Dollar worth and the export market 156 million Dollar. Most of the export went to the Gulf and the Middle East. The internal as well as the foreign markets are expected to continue to grow the coming years.
